Loss of culture in any society is an extremely traumatic experience. By 1900 general interest in Aborigines was beginning to grow with concern for their welfare. Magic Lantern slide evenings were the best way to give people information about Aborigines. Images such as this are now quite scarce.

A lantern slide is a positive not a negative which means that very good quality prints can be made from them. The showing of lantern slides preceded movies and by the mid 19th century it was a very popular form of entertainment. People would travel around the country having lantern slide evenings in local halls. The slides covered many subjects. There was considerable interest in slides such as this one that told about different peoples and different countries.

Missionary groups used them to tell people about the work of missionaries in faraway lands. The showing was actually called a Magic Lantern Slide Evening given that the phenomenon was so unusual. The lantern itself was gas powered to give the light required for projection. It is an image creating technique now long gone.

The slide is 8.2 cms in width x 8.2 cms in height. Please refer to description above. For International Registered Post please inquire.
